Prevent Pet Overpopulation in
Central Florida!
The National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy conducted a survey (1997) and found that approximately 64% of the total number of animals entering the 1000 shelters that participated were euthanized. A more recent estimate by the ASPCA is that in 2008 approximately 3.7 million animals were euthanized in the nation’s shelters. The Humane Alliance in Asheville, NC has commented in their video that euthanasia is the number one reason for pet mortality. Healthy, adoptable pets are euthanized because they are unable to find their forever homes.
In Central Florida there is only one shelter, 2 clinics and a handful of private vet practices that offer low cost spay/neuter services for the 2 million plus residents. That is not enough to service the one million cats and dogs and not to mention the quarter of a million feral cats in the community. The Animal Welfare Alliance of Central Florida wants to do its part to help ease the situation. By offering affordable spay/neuter services to those in need and promoting its benefits, we can reduce the number of unwanted litters and reduce the number of shelter impounds by reducing the negative behavior in intact pets.
